TikTok Agentic Leads and Buy Direct: What UK Advertisers Can Actually Use
TikTok announced agentic lead capture, in-app checkout and a shopping assistant on 5 October. Most UK advertisers cannot use them yet. Here is what to do instead.

TikTok Agentic Leads, Buy Direct and a new Shopping Assistant were announced on 5 October, and the honest answer for most UK advertisers is that none of it changes what you should do this month. The products are real, but TikTok's own documentation describes them as eligibility-based testing opportunities you access through a sales rep. If you do not have one, you cannot switch them on.
That does not make the announcement irrelevant. It tells you where TikTok wants your budget to go, and it is worth deciding now how you will respond.
What TikTok actually announced
At Advertising Week New York, TikTok unveiled a set of AI-powered updates for advertisers. The ones that matter for a typical UK business are these.
Agentic Leads is a conversational agent that chats with prospects in TikTok Direct Message and on lead forms on your own website. It answers questions from a knowledge base you supply, qualifies the prospect and collects contact details with consent.
Buy Direct is in-app checkout from the For You feed, with one-click purchase using stored payment details. According to TikTok's explainer on its agentic solutions, it depends on integration with the Universal Commerce Protocol and works through partners including Shopify, Salesforce, Shoplazza and Stripe.
Shopping Assistant puts a chat window on a product so shoppers can ask questions and get answers based on merchant-supplied information.
There is also a Smart+ search ads campaign type, a Smart+ creative workflow that pulls advertiser, AI-generated and creator content into one approval queue, and an update to GMV Max for TikTok Shop sellers. The announcement gives no UK launch dates for any of them, and it does not say whether the search campaign type is open to every account or only some.
What is not available to you
Be careful with the TikTok Ad Network. It sounds like a big opportunity, since TikTok says it can extend campaigns across nearly 400,000 apps. But it is generally available for US targeting only. If a vendor or a sales rep tells you it is about to transform your UK campaigns, ask for the date and the market list in writing.
Treat any performance figure TikTok quotes from early testing the same way. It comes from the platform, not from a UK service business spending a few thousand pounds a month, so wait until you see your own account data before believing it.
Where each one could genuinely help
Agentic Leads is the one worth watching for service businesses. Lead quality is the standing problem with TikTok lead forms: they are quick to fill in, so they attract casual submissions. A qualifying conversation before the lead reaches you could filter out the idle ones. It could also go wrong. An automated agent talking to your prospects speaks for your brand, and the knowledge base you give it decides whether it says something useful or something you would never put in writing.
Buy Direct matters only if you sell products and your platform is on the integration list. For a Shopify store it may well reduce checkout friction. For a business whose customers need to read, compare and think, it does nothing.
The Smart+ search campaign will not rescue weak targeting. Automation works better on a clean account than a messy one, and nothing in the announcement says otherwise. If you are already using Smart+ for conversion campaigns, our look at what the new Smart+ controls give you back covers the limits you should keep in place.
What to do this month
- Do not restructure anything because of an announcement. Nothing here is live in your account, and a campaign rebuilt around a feature you cannot access is wasted effort.
- Fix your lead handling before you add an AI layer. If enquiries from TikTok take a day to get a reply, an agent will not solve that. Speed of response and a clear qualification process come first.
- Check your tracking. Any of these tools optimises towards the conversion you give it. If your events are wrong, automation simply scales the wrong result faster.
- Ask your TikTok contact about eligibility. If you spend enough to have one, ask which of these tests include UK advertisers and what the entry criteria are. If you do not have one, wait for general availability.
The pattern across Google, Meta and TikTok is the same: more automation, less manual control, and a push to feed the platform your own customer data. That makes the basics more valuable, not less. Clean conversion events, a landing page that converts and a fast follow-up process determine whether an AI agent helps you or amplifies your problems. If you are working on those, our paid social service and conversion rate optimisation work cover exactly that ground.
